As the sun pokes its head out, and the Great British public grab the sun cream and head outside, the staff at Halfpenny Green Wine Estate will be hard at work. July and August are the two biggest growing months for vineyards across the U.K., typically seeing the highest temperatures and sunshine levels of the year – all leading to bigger, juicier grapes, perfect for producing high quality wines.
Halfpenny Green isn’t just working hard to produce internationally award-winning wines, though. Announced late May, the Wine Estate are now proud owners of a Silver Medal in the International Wine Challenge Cellar Door competition, which judges estates and vineyards based on their overall visitor experience – no small feat given that Halfpenny Green were the only destination to win an award outside of the South East of England.
Up for critique in particular were the Wine Estate’s on-site shop and Wine Loft, which offer visitors a unique insight into the English wines grown and produced entirely on the 30 acre South Staffordshire site. A selection of the Halfpenny Green’s wines are available to the public for free sampling 7 days a week. For a more in-depth approach, guests can enjoy full wine tasting experiences – complete with cheese and a self-guided trail of the vineyard – whilst overlooking the serene Staffordshire countryside. Or, new for 2017, the Wine Loft now offers gin tasting experiences, complementing the shop’s range of 70+ handcrafted British gins.
The Wine Estate also offers guided tours of the vineyard and winery for those keen to learn more about winemaking in the English climate – including a tasting and a two course meal! Tours are available for booking on selected dates throughout the year; upcoming dates include Thursday 7th September and Thursday 5th October. Private group tours are available to book for groups of 15 or more throughout the year.
To complement a visit, guests are also invited to dine in the Wine Estate’s restaurant and tea room. All food is prepared on-site and cooked fresh to order by a team of chefs, served to your table by waiting staff. Featuring a full mains menu served daily 12PM-3:30PM, as well as daily and Sunday specials, breakfasts, cream teas, cakes, drinks and high teas, the tranquil site near Wombourne is the perfect destination for a full three course meal, or even just a quick bite this summer.
‘Wine Estate’ isn’t just a fancy term for a vineyard, though, as the site is also home to a bustling craft centre with over 15 artisan businesses, all offering bespoke services. A great place to pick up a special or commissioned gift, or simply just indulge your hobbies, the craft centre wonderfully compliments the site’s intimate feel.
Opened in 2016, WILD Zoological Park is one of the newest additions to the site. Showcasing a range of animals from all over the world, featuring daily shows and feeding times, it’s the perfect way for the whole family to spend a day together.
Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is open 7 days a week, 9AM-5PM. If you’re looking for a different day out, pop along to the South Staffordshire site. With something for all ages and appetites, Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is the perfect summer destination.
