The rugby season has just kicked off with the First XV opening game away in North Yorkshire at Otley on September 2nd and at home on September 9th against local rivals Luctonians. Newly promoted Stourbridge Lions opened their account away at Dudley Kingswinford on the 2nd and at home against Hereford on the 9th. The Luctonians game was played on the road side pitch, with the Hereford game on the Greyhounds pitch.
All this revised pitch allocation was due to the relaying of the First XV surface with a brand new Artificial Grass Pitch. This new facility is the outcome of months of planning and contractual negotiation with the RFU as part of a nationwide push to fund 50 such projects throughout the country. Local Planning consent was granted in May by South Staffs Council and the digging up of the topsoil started in June. Since then some 7,000 tons have been moved, the old floodlights and perimeter fencing have been dismantled. Extensive drainage has been installed and 6,000 tons of gravel has been spread with a new membrane. There was some hold-up in August with unseasonal rain holding back the progress. The new floodlights have been installed with a 1.5 metre tarmac path surround and fencing being completed.
The overall concept is that throughout the country one in every 2,000 rugby players will have regional access to an all -weather pitch, an improvement from the current one in 15,000. All local Rugby Clubs, colleges, schools and academies will be able to book the facility seven days per week with priority usage for the host clubs especially on training nights, on Saturdays for matches and for Mini and Junior youngsters on Sundays as well as for Ladies and Girls. Six- a-side football will be encouraged and each host club is provided with four sets of goal posts.
On October 14th when the club host Huddersfield all Stourbridge ex-players are invited and October 28th, when Sedgley Park visit, is the official launch open day with the RFU hierarchy and local dignitaries. Everyone from the region is welcome to join us to witness the pitch and the playing conditions. There will be no entry charge on the day and refreshments will be available throughout.
